A cooling tower is a specialized heat exchanger where hot water is mixed with air to reduce the temperature of the water. As the water is cooled, heat is released into the atmosphere through evaporation. The cooled water is then pumped back into the system.
An air handler, or air handling unit (often abbreviated to AHU), is a device used to regulate and circulate air. It houses a fan, heating or cooling elements, filter racks or chambers, sound attenuators, and dampers. Air handlers connect to a ductwork ventilation system that distributes the conditioned air through the building and returns it to the AHU.
Hydronic Pumps are external water pumps that move water throughout the components of the HVAC system.
A Centrifugal Chiller contains a compressor system that moves a heat-absorbing refrigerant around a coil. It uses the vapor compression cycle to chill water. It throws off the heat collected from the chilled water plus the heat from the compressor to a water loop. The water loop is cooled by a cooling tower.
A water closet carrier, also known as a toilet carrier, is used to connect the toilet to the sanitary drainpipe system. It is designed to specifically match the installed fixture.
The domestic cold-water line is typically made up of copper in a commercial building and supplies water to the fixtures.
Sanitary waste system is typically made up of 3” or 4” cast iron pipe joined together by a rubber coupling surrounded by a metal sheath.
A sanitary vent system is needed to allow air to escape as water fills the piping system. Otherwise a vacuum effect is created, and water cannot flow properly.
